Why WordPress is still a top choice for business websites.

New website builders appear every year, and WordPress is still what a large share of the web runs on. There are practical reasons for that, and one honest caveat.

It is the most widely used platform

WordPress powers more than 40 percent of all websites, according to W3Techs, which tracks the technology behind sites. That scale matters to a business owner for a simple reason: you will never struggle to find someone who can work on it.

You own it

WordPress is open source software. Your site, content and data sit on hosting you choose, and you can move them to another host or another developer at any time. With a closed website builder, the site only exists on that company's platform and under its pricing.

It can do almost anything

There is a well-supported plugin or integration for nearly every need: forms, bookings, e-commerce, memberships, CRM connections and analytics. You rarely have to rebuild the site because the business added something new.

It gives you control over SEO

You control page titles, descriptions, headings, URLs, redirects, structured data and the sitemap. That same control is what makes answer engine optimization possible, because you decide exactly how each page is structured.

Your team can edit it

Once it is set up well, non-technical staff can update text, add pages and publish articles without calling a developer.

It grows with you

The same platform runs five-page brochure sites and very large publications. You can start small and add to it.

The honest caveat

WordPress needs looking after. The core software, theme and plugins release updates constantly, and a site that is not updated becomes slow, breaks or gets compromised. Most WordPress horror stories are really stories about neglected sites. See our WordPress maintenance checklist and why it pays to have someone manage your site.

When something else fits better

If you need a one-page site this week and never plan to grow it, a simple hosted builder is fine. If you run a large online store, a dedicated e-commerce platform may suit you better. For a business site that needs to be found, edited and extended, WordPress remains a strong default.
